SSC CGL 2026: Tentative Vacancies Revised to 10,731 as Tier-I Exam Continues Through 30 October
The Staff Selection Commission has revised the tentative vacancy count for the Combined Graduate Level Examination 2026 to 10,731 posts, as per its notice dated 24 September 2026 - down from the approximately 12,256 vacancies indicated when the exam notification was first issued. The Tier-I (computer-based) examination is being held in multiple shifts across the window of 30 September to 30 October 2026; question papers have already been administered for sittings on 30 September, 1 October, 5 October and 6 October, with the exam continuing on further dates through the end of October. A new sectional-timing format applies this year, with each section of the Tier-I paper carrying its own separate 15-minute time limit rather than one composite timer for the whole paper. The Commission has indicated the Tier-II examination will follow in December 2026; exact Tier-II dates and Tier-I results will be announced separately on the official SSC website; the post-wise and category-wise vacancy breakup is already published in the 24 September notice.

What this means for you
Going from about 12,256 to 10,731 tentative posts (roughly 1,500 fewer) means fewer seats for a similar pool of candidates, so competition for the remaining posts is likely to be somewhat tighter. The change is not uniform, though: the 24 September notice lists tentative vacancies post by post and category by category, so check the posts you are actually targeting rather than the headline total, and note SSC's own caveat that final vacancies may still change. Tier-I only shortlists candidates for Tier-II, which decides final merit. If your shift is still ahead, practise pacing each section within its own 15-minute limit; if it is behind you, begin Tier-II preparation for December and watch for the tentative answer key and its objection window. Check the official SSC notice for the post-wise table.
