SSC CHSL Salary 2026: Official Pay Scale and Job Profile

SSC CHSL fills two kinds of Group C posts in central government ministries, departments and offices, and in constitutional and statutory bodies and tribunals: Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC/JSA), and Data Entry Operator (DEO and DEO Grade ‘A’). This page sticks to what the CHSL 2026 notice says about the posts, their pay levels and how posts are allotted. It does not describe daily duties or estimate take-home pay, because the notice does neither.

Two kinds of post under one exam

Many older guides still list Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant under CHSL. The 2026 notice does not: its posts are LDC/JSA, DEO and DEO Grade ‘A’ only.

Which post and department you get depends on your Tier-II merit and the post preferences you submit on SSC’s website before the result. You are considered only for the posts and departments you list, and once your merit gets you your first available preference you are not considered for any other. Preferences cannot be changed later.

All the posts carry All India Service Liability, so you can be posted anywhere in India. The department that takes you may allot you a state, UT or zone, and may require you to learn its local language before you are confirmed.

The posts and their skill tests

Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC/JSA)
Pay Level 2. Needs 12th pass. Tier-II has a qualifying typing test in the medium you chose in the application form: 35 words a minute in English or 30 in Hindi, typing a given passage on a computer in 10 minutes.
Data Entry Operator (DEO)
Pay Level 4 or Level 5; the notice gives both levels without saying which posts sit at which. The skill test is compulsory: 15,000 key depressions an hour for DEO posts in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission and the Ministry of Culture (these three need 12th pass in Science with Mathematics), and 8,000 key depressions an hour everywhere else (12th pass). Each test is 15 minutes on an English passage.
Data Entry Operator Grade ‘A’
Pay Level 4. The same compulsory skill test and qualification as DEO, set by the office the post is in.

Probation and promotion

The notice says you serve two years on probation, during which you may have to undergo training or pass examinations set by your controlling authority, and you are confirmed in the post afterwards if found fit. It does not describe promotion, which follows the rules of the department you join, and this page does not guess at it.

Pay: Level 2 for LDC/JSA, Level 4 or 5 for DEO

The notice gives these pay scales: LDC/JSA at Pay Level 2 (₹19,900–₹63,200); Data Entry Operator at Pay Level 4 (₹25,500–₹81,100) or Level 5 (₹29,200–₹92,300); Data Entry Operator Grade ‘A’ at Pay Level 4 (₹25,500–₹81,100).

The notice does not list allowances or in-hand pay, and this page does not estimate them.

The official notice is the authority for posts, pay levels and vacancies, and it changes from cycle to cycle. Confirm current details against the SSC CHSL 2026 notice.
