SSC GD Constable Syllabus & Exam Pattern

SSC GD (Constable General Duty in the Central Armed Police Forces and SSF, and Rifleman GD in Assam Rifles) selects in stages: a computer-based exam, then physical tests, then a medical examination and document verification. Here’s the shape of it, taken from the SSC notice, with a link to the notice for this cycle’s exact marks and timing.

The stages

Computer Based Examination (CBE)
One objective multiple-choice paper in four parts: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Knowledge and General Awareness, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi. Questions are of Matriculation level, and your CBE score (with any NCC bonus) decides who is shortlisted for the physical tests and the final merit.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST)
Held by the forces for candidates shortlisted from the CBE: a timed race (PET), and measurement of height, chest (men) and weight (PST). Standards differ for men and women, and some categories and regions get relaxations. The notice lists them.
Medical examination and document verification
Candidates who clear the physical tests are examined by the forces’ medical boards and their original documents are verified. The final selection is by CBE merit, and forces are allotted by that merit and the preferences you filled in the application form.

What’s tested in the CBE

General Intelligence and Reasoning
Mainly non-verbal questions: analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualisation and orientation, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, figural classification, number series, non-verbal series, and coding-decoding.
General Knowledge and General Awareness
Awareness of the environment around you, current events and everyday observation in their scientific aspect, plus India and its neighbouring countries: sports, history, culture, geography, the economic scene, general polity, the Indian Constitution and scientific research. No special study of any one discipline is needed.
Elementary Mathematics
Number systems, computation with whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, mensuration, time and distance, and time and work.
English / Hindi
Basic understanding of English or Hindi and basic comprehension.

The number of questions, marks, timing and negative marking are set by each cycle’s own SSC notice and can change from one cycle to the next. Treat the subjects above as the shape to study toward, and check the SSC notice for this cycle.
