Data Interpretation Questions with Solutions
Data Interpretation is mostly ordinary arithmetic wearing a table or chart as a disguise — reading the data accurately is the only genuinely new skill; the calculations themselves are Percentages, Ratios and Averages you already know. Here’s the concept, four fully worked examples using one shared table, and a few to try yourself.
The concept, quickly
- Always check the units and any scale given with the table or chart ("figures in thousands," "sales in ₹ lakhs") before calculating — misreading the scale is the single most common careless mistake in this topic.
- For "what percentage more/less" questions, calculate the percentage change relative to the ORIGINAL value (the thing being compared against), not the new value — the same base-of-comparison rule from Percentages, just inside a table.
- For multi-step questions, compute each individual value needed FIRST and write it down, rather than trying to combine several lookups in your head at once.
- A ratio or an average computed from table data works exactly like the standalone Ratio/Average topics — the table just supplies the raw numbers.
Worked examples
1. A company’s annual sales (in ₹ lakhs) were: 2020 – 50, 2021 – 60, 2022 – 75, 2023 – 90, 2024 – 120. Find the percentage increase in sales from 2020 to 2021.
Solution
- Increase = 60 − 50 = 10.
- Percentage increase = (10/50) × 100 = 20%.
Answer: 20%
2. Using the same sales table (2020 – 50, 2021 – 60, 2022 – 75, 2023 – 90, 2024 – 120, in ₹ lakhs), find the average annual sales over the five years.
Solution
- Sum = 50 + 60 + 75 + 90 + 120 = 395.
- Average = 395 / 5 = 79.
Answer: ₹79 lakh
3. Using the same sales table (2020 – 50, 2021 – 60, 2022 – 75, 2023 – 90, 2024 – 120, in ₹ lakhs), in which year was the percentage increase in sales over the previous year the highest?
Solution
- 2020→2021: (10/50)×100 = 20%. 2021→2022: (15/60)×100 = 25%. 2022→2023: (15/75)×100 = 20%. 2023→2024: (30/90)×100 ≈ 33.3%.
- The highest is 2023→2024, so 2024 had the highest percentage increase over its previous year.
Answer: 2024
4. Using the same sales table (2020 – 50, 2021 – 60, 2022 – 75, 2023 – 90, 2024 – 120, in ₹ lakhs), find the ratio of sales in 2022 to sales in 2024.
Solution
- Ratio = 75 : 120.
- Dividing both terms by their HCF, 15: 75÷15 : 120÷15 = 5 : 8.
Answer: 5 : 8
Try these yourself
Read the table carefully, then check against the answer.
1. Using the same sales table (2020: 50, 2021: 60, 2022: 75, 2023: 90, 2024: 120, in ₹ lakhs), find the percentage increase in sales from 2022 to 2023.
Answer: 20%
2. Using the same sales table, find the total sales over 2020, 2021 and 2022 combined.
Answer: ₹185 lakh
3. Using the same sales table, find the ratio of sales in 2020 to sales in 2023.
Answer: 5 : 9
