Family Tree (Blood Relations) Questions with Solutions

This is Blood Relations at a larger scale — instead of tracing one relationship, you build a small family tree across generations and read multiple relationships off it. Here’s the approach, one shared family tree with four fully worked questions, and a few more to try yourself.

The approach, quickly

  • Build the tree top to bottom as you read each clue — the oldest generation at the top, their children below, their children’s children below that.
  • Mark every person’s gender the moment it’s given (directly, or implied by a word like "husband," "sister," or "son") — the final relationship name (uncle vs aunt, grandson vs granddaughter) always depends on it.
  • A married-in person (a husband or wife who isn’t a blood descendant) still belongs on the tree at their spouse’s generation level, connected sideways rather than by a line of descent.
  • Once the tree is drawn, read relationships directly off it by counting generations and tracing the connecting line — this is far more reliable than trying to reason through a long relationship chain in your head.

Worked examples

1. P is the father of Q. Q is the mother of R, a boy. S is the husband of Q. T is the sister of R. How is P related to R?

Solution

  1. Tree: P (generation 1) is Q’s father. Q (generation 2) is R and T’s mother; S (generation 2) is Q’s husband, so S is R and T’s father too. R and T (generation 3) are siblings.
  2. P is Q’s father, and Q is R’s mother — so P is R’s grandfather, specifically on R’s mother’s side.

Answer: P is the maternal grandfather of R

2. Using the same family and clues, how is S related to P?

Solution

  1. S is Q’s husband, and P is Q’s father — the husband of one’s daughter is one’s son-in-law.

Answer: S is the son-in-law of P

3. Using the same family and clues, how is T related to S?

Solution

  1. T is R’s sister, and S is R’s father (as Q’s husband) — so T is also S’s daughter.

Answer: T is the daughter of S

4. Using the same family and clues, how many of P’s grandchildren are mentioned in the information?

Solution

  1. P’s only child mentioned is Q, and Q’s children are R and T — that’s 2 of P’s grandchildren mentioned.

Answer: 2

Try these yourself

2. Using the same family and clues, how is R related to S?
