Logical Sequence of Words Questions with Solutions
These questions ask you to order a set of words by some external logic — a hierarchy, a real-world process, or plain dictionary order — not by any pattern within the words themselves. Here’s the approach, four fully worked examples covering each pattern, and a few to try yourself.
The approach, quickly
- First identify what kind of order is being asked for — size/hierarchy (smallest to largest), a real-world process (what logically happens first), or dictionary (alphabetical) order.
- For hierarchy questions, think of the real-world containment: a smaller unit sits inside a larger one (a village is inside a block, a block inside a district), and that containment gives the order directly.
- For process questions, think through the real sequence of events as they’d actually happen, step by step, rather than guessing from how important or familiar each word sounds.
- For dictionary order, compare words letter by letter at the first point they differ — and when one word is an exact prefix of another (like "Broth" and "Brother"), the shorter word always comes first.
Worked examples
1. Arrange in a logical order, from smallest administrative unit to largest: 1. District 2. Village 3. State 4. Country 5. Block
Solution
- A village sits inside a block, a block inside a district, a district inside a state, and a state inside a country.
Answer: 2, 5, 1, 3, 4 (Village, Block, District, State, Country)
2. Arrange in the order they occur in a process: 1. Seed 2. Fruit 3. Plant 4. Flower 5. Germination
Solution
- A seed germinates, grows into a plant, the plant produces a flower, and the flower develops into a fruit.
Answer: 1, 5, 3, 4, 2 (Seed, Germination, Plant, Flower, Fruit)
3. Arrange as they would appear in a dictionary: 1. Patience 2. Patient 3. Pattern 4. Path 5. Patch
Solution
- The first three letters ("Pat") are shared by all five, so compare from the 4th letter: Patch (c), Path (h), Patience/Patient (i), Pattern (t).
- Patience and Patient share "Pati," so compare further in: Patience has "...tience," Patient has "...tient" — "c" comes before "t", so Patience comes first.
Answer: 5, 4, 1, 2, 3 (Patch, Path, Patience, Patient, Pattern)
4. Arrange in the order they occur in a process: 1. Graduation 2. Admission 3. Examination 4. Classes
Solution
- A student is admitted, then attends classes, then takes examinations, then graduates.
Answer: 2, 4, 3, 1 (Admission, Classes, Examination, Graduation)
Try these yourself
Identify the kind of order needed, then check against the answer.
1. Arrange in a logical order, from smallest to largest: 1. Centimetre 2. Kilometre 3. Metre 4. Millimetre
Answer: 4, 1, 3, 2 (Millimetre, Centimetre, Metre, Kilometre)
2. Arrange as they would appear in a dictionary: 1. Bronze 2. Brown 3. Broth 4. Brother
Answer: 1, 3, 4, 2 (Bronze, Broth, Brother, Brown)
3. Arrange in the order they occur in a process: 1. Harvesting 2. Sowing 3. Ploughing 4. Irrigation
Answer: 3, 2, 4, 1 (Ploughing, Sowing, Irrigation, Harvesting)
