Mean, Third and Fourth Proportional Questions with Solutions
These three question types all ask you to complete a proportion with a missing term — the only real skill is setting up the right proportion statement before cross-multiplying. Here’s the concept, four fully worked examples, and a few to try yourself.
The concept, quickly
- Fourth proportional to a, b, c: find x such that a : b = c : x. Cross-multiplying gives x = (b × c) / a.
- Third proportional to a, b: find x such that a : b = b : x — note b is repeated. Cross-multiplying gives x = b² / a.
- Mean proportional between a and b: find x such that a : x = x : b — x is repeated this time. Cross-multiplying gives x² = a × b, so x = √(ab).
- The three are easy to mix up because they all involve three given-or-implied numbers — write out the proportion statement explicitly first, with the unknown in its correct position, before cross-multiplying.
Worked examples
1. Find the fourth proportional to 3, 5 and 12.
Solution
- Set up: 3 : 5 = 12 : x.
- Cross-multiply: x = (5 × 12) / 3 = 60 / 3 = 20.
Answer: 20
2. Find the third proportional to 4 and 8.
Solution
- Set up: 4 : 8 = 8 : x.
- Cross-multiply: x = 8² / 4 = 64 / 4 = 16.
Answer: 16
3. Find the mean proportional between 4 and 25.
Solution
- Set up: 4 : x = x : 25.
- Cross-multiply: x² = 4 × 25 = 100, so x = √100 = 10.
Answer: 10
4. Find the fourth proportional to 6, 9 and 18.
Solution
- Set up: 6 : 9 = 18 : x.
- Cross-multiply: x = (9 × 18) / 6 = 162 / 6 = 27.
Answer: 27
Try these yourself
Write out the proportion statement first, then cross-multiply, and check against the answer.

Answer: 20
2. Find the mean proportional between 9 and 16.
Answer: 12
3. Find the fourth proportional to 2, 7 and 10.
Answer: 35
