Para Completion Questions with Solutions
A paragraph has an internal logic — a direction it’s building toward — and the right completion continues that direction without overreaching, contradicting, or wandering off into an unrelated detail. Here’s the approach, four fully worked examples, and a few to try yourself.
The approach, quickly
- Read the whole paragraph first and identify the trend or point it’s building — the correct ending continues that same line of thought, usually with a natural connector like "therefore," "as a result," or "this."
- Eliminate any option that contradicts something already stated in the paragraph, even partially.
- Eliminate any option that overreaches — makes an extreme, absolute claim ("completely," "always," "never") the paragraph’s moderate tone doesn’t support.
- Eliminate any option that’s a true-sounding but unrelated detail or trivia — it doesn’t continue the paragraph’s point just because it’s a plausible fact.
Worked examples
1. Complete the paragraph: "Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are becoming cheaper every year. Many countries are now generating a significant share of their electricity from these sources. ___" (A) As costs continue to fall, this share is expected to keep growing in the coming decades. (B) However, fossil fuels will remain completely irrelevant from now on. (C) Solar panels require regular cleaning to maintain efficiency. (D) Wind turbines are very tall structures.
Solution
- (A) directly continues the established trend (falling costs, growing share) into the future. Correct.
- (B) overreaches with "completely irrelevant," far stronger than anything the paragraph supports. (C) and (D) are plausible but unrelated details, not a continuation of the trend.
Answer: (A) As costs continue to fall, this share is expected to keep growing in the coming decades.
2. Complete the paragraph: "The number of electric vehicles on Indian roads has grown rapidly over the past five years. Several state governments have introduced subsidies to encourage buyers. Charging infrastructure, however, is still limited in smaller towns. ___" (A) This remains one of the key challenges to wider EV adoption outside major cities. (B) Many car manufacturers also produce motorcycles. (C) Petrol prices have remained stable this year. (D) Most buyers prefer vehicles with manual transmissions.
Solution
- (A) directly follows from the stated limitation, naming it as a consequence/challenge. Correct.
- (B), (C) and (D) are all unrelated details that don’t continue the point about limited charging infrastructure.
Answer: (A) This remains one of the key challenges to wider EV adoption outside major cities.
3. Complete the paragraph: "Libraries have traditionally been seen as quiet spaces for reading and research. In recent years, many libraries have begun hosting community events, workshops and even coding classes. ___" (A) This reflects a broader shift towards libraries as multi-purpose community spaces. (B) Reading remains the only activity allowed inside library buildings. (C) Library buildings are typically made of brick and concrete. (D) Most libraries close on public holidays.
Solution
- (A) names the broader trend the paragraph’s examples (events, workshops, coding classes) are pointing to. Correct.
- (B) directly contradicts the paragraph, which says libraries now host other activities. (C) and (D) are unrelated details.
Answer: (A) This reflects a broader shift towards libraries as multi-purpose community spaces.
4. Complete the paragraph: "Regular physical exercise has been linked to improved mood and reduced stress. Several studies show that even short daily walks can have a measurable positive effect. ___" (A) Therefore, many health experts now recommend incorporating some form of daily movement into one’s routine. (B) Exercise equipment can be expensive to purchase. (C) Many people enjoy walking in natural surroundings such as parks. (D) Walking shoes come in many different styles.
Solution
- (A) draws the natural "therefore" conclusion from the stated benefits. Correct.
- (B), (C) and (D) are all plausible but unrelated tangents, not a conclusion drawn from the stated benefits.
Answer: (A) Therefore, many health experts now recommend incorporating some form of daily movement into one’s routine.
Try these yourself
Identify the paragraph’s direction, eliminate contradictions/overreach/trivia, then check against the answer.
1. Complete the paragraph: "Urban green spaces such as parks and gardens help reduce air pollution and provide recreational areas for residents. Many cities are now investing in rooftop gardens and vertical greenery to make up for limited land. ___" (A) This trend is especially useful in densely populated cities with little available ground space. (B) Most rooftop gardens require a specially reinforced roof structure. (C) Most parks charge an entrance fee. (D) Air pollution levels vary by season.
Answer: (A) This trend is especially useful in densely populated cities with little available ground space.
2. Complete the paragraph: "Online learning platforms have made education more accessible to students in remote areas. However, not every student has access to a stable internet connection or a suitable device. ___" (A) This gap continues to limit how equally the benefits of online learning are shared. (B) Online courses are always shorter than traditional classroom courses. (C) Some universities require entrance exams for admission. (D) Most universities now have a library.
Answer: (A) This gap continues to limit how equally the benefits of online learning are shared.
3. Complete the paragraph: "Traditional handicrafts play an important role in preserving a region’s cultural heritage. Many artisans, however, struggle to find a sustainable market for their products. ___" (A) Online marketplaces have begun helping some of these artisans reach a wider base of customers. (B) Handicrafts are always more expensive than factory-made goods. (C) Most artisans work exclusively with wood. (D) Cultural heritage cannot be measured in economic terms.
