Spelling Correction Questions with Solutions

Unlike Homophones (choosing between different words that sound alike), this topic tests the correct spelling of a single intended word — pure recognition, built from exposure to the words that repeat most often. Here’s the approach, four fully worked examples using some of the most frequently tested misspellings, and a few to try yourself.

The approach, quickly

  • These questions give several spellings of the same word and ask which one is correct — this tests spelling of a single intended word, not choosing between different words (that’s what Homophones covers).
  • A few patterns behind commonly misspelled words: double letters that get dropped or doubled wrongly ("necessary" has one C and two S’s); silent letters that get skipped ("Wednesday", "foreign"); -able/-ible and -ance/-ence endings, which mostly have to be memorised individually rather than derived from a rule.
  • When unsure between similar-looking spellings, break the word into its recognisable parts — "misspell" is "mis" + "spell", so it genuinely needs two S’s in the middle, not one, despite looking like it might not.
  • These words repeat often across past papers, so building a working list from practice is usually more efficient than trying to memorise a dictionary.

Worked examples

1. Choose the correctly spelled word: (A) Recieve (B) Receive (C) Receve (D) Receeve

Solution

  1. "Receive" follows "i before e except after c" — since it comes after "c", it’s "ei", not "ie".

Answer: (B) Receive

2. Choose the correctly spelled word: (A) Neccessary (B) Necessary (C) Neccesary (D) Necesary

Solution

  1. "Necessary" has one C and two S’s — often misremembered the other way around.

Answer: (B) Necessary

3. Choose the correctly spelled word: (A) Accomodate (B) Acommodate (C) Accommodate (D) Acomodate

Solution

  1. "Accommodate" has two C’s and two M’s — one of the most commonly misspelled English words, usually dropping one of the double letters.

Answer: (C) Accommodate

4. Choose the correctly spelled word: (A) Embarass (B) Embarrass (C) Embaras (D) Embarrasse
