Tag Questions Questions with Solutions

Tag questions run on one flip rule — positive statement, negative tag; negative statement, positive tag — plus matching the auxiliary verb and pronoun exactly. Here’s the approach, four fully worked examples, and a few to try yourself.

The approach, quickly

  • The core rule: if the main statement is POSITIVE, the tag is NEGATIVE; if the main statement is NEGATIVE, the tag is POSITIVE.
  • The tag always uses the SAME auxiliary verb as the main statement, and a PRONOUN matching the subject — never the subject’s own noun repeated: "Ravi is coming, isn’t he?" not "isn’t Ravi?".
  • If the main statement has no visible auxiliary (a simple present or simple past sentence with just a main verb), the tag borrows "do/does" (present) or "did" (past): "She likes tea, doesn’t she?"
  • A few fixed exceptions: "I am" pairs with the tag "aren’t I?" (not "amn’t I"); imperatives ("Close the door") typically take "will you?"; "Let’s" sentences take "shall we?".

Worked examples

1. Add the correct tag question: "She is a doctor, ___?"

Solution

  1. Positive statement ("is") → negative tag, using the same auxiliary "is" and the pronoun "she".

Answer: isn’t she?

2. Add the correct tag question: "They don’t like coffee, ___?"

Solution

  1. Negative statement ("don’t") → positive tag, using the same auxiliary "do" and the pronoun "they".

Answer: do they?

3. Add the correct tag question: "Ravi completed his homework, ___?"

Solution

  1. Positive, simple past, no visible auxiliary — borrow "did" for the tag, made negative since the statement is positive.

Answer: didn’t he?

4. Add the correct tag question: "I am your friend, ___?"

Solution

  1. "I am" is a fixed exception — its tag is always "aren’t I?", never "amn’t I?".

Answer: aren’t I?
