SSC typing and data entry practice
Practise the SSC skill tests with the official time limits and standards: the CGL Tier-II Data Entry Speed Test, the CHSL Data Entry Operator skill tests and the CHSL LDC/JSA typing test in English or Hindi. Every standard below is copied from the official notice and linked to it.
The tests and their official standards
- CGL Tier-II DEST / CHSL DEO (other departments) · 15 minutes
- CGL Tier-II: a passage of about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes; qualifying. Maximum errors allowed: 20% (UR), 25% (OBC/EWS), 30% (all other categories); higher standards for posts such as Tax Assistant. (CGL notice, paras 13.9.10 and 16.2)
- CHSL Data Entry Operator in departments other than those named in the notice: 8,000 key depressions per hour, judged on a passage of about 2,000-2,200 key depressions in 15 minutes. (CHSL notice, para 13.9.13.6(iii))
- CHSL DEO in the named ministries (15,000 KDPH) · 15 minutes
- CHSL Data Entry Operator in the departments named in the notice: 15,000 key depressions per hour, judged on a passage of about 3,700-4,000 key depressions in 15 minutes. (CHSL notice, para 13.9.13.6(ii))
- CHSL LDC/JSA typing test (English, 35 w.p.m.) · 10 minutes
- CHSL Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant, English medium: 35 words per minute, which the notice says corresponds to about 10,500 key depressions per hour, judged on the accuracy of typing a given passage in 10 minutes. (CHSL notice, para 13.9.13.7)
- CHSL LDC/JSA typing test (Hindi, 30 w.p.m.) · 10 minutes
- CHSL LDC/JSA, Hindi medium: 30 words per minute, about 9,000 key depressions per hour, in 10 minutes. Hindi typing in the exam must be in the Mangal font; any other font means non-qualification. (CHSL notice, para 13.9.13.7)
- Here you type with your own Hindi keyboard (Inscript, Remington or a phonetic one); the page compares the Unicode text, which is what Mangal displays.
How your attempt is checked
Mistakes are classified exactly as in SSC's revised evaluation guidelines:
- Full mistakes: a word left out, a wrong word, an extra word, a repeated word, a spelling mistake, an incomplete word.
- Half mistakes: a spacing mistake ("Ihope", "h ave"), wrong capitalisation (not counted for Hindi), a punctuation mark left out, added or changed, two words swapped.
- You may correct mistakes within the time, as in the exam. Pasting text is switched off.
The guidelines do not publish how mistakes become an error percentage, so the error rate shown here is our own measure, stated plainly: your mistakes (a half mistake counts half) divided by the passage words you reached. Speed is counted the notices' way: key depressions are characters typed, spaces included, and a word is 5 key depressions (35 w.p.m. corresponds to about 10,500 key depressions per hour). Net speed counts only words typed with no mistake.
The passages are original practice text written for Pariksha Saathi with AI assistance, not past SSC passages.
