Approximation Questions with Solutions
Approximation questions aren’t asking for the exact answer — they’re asking for the answer closest to the options given, so rounding every number first is the technique, not a shortcut around it. Here’s the concept, four fully worked examples, and a few to try yourself.
The concept, quickly
- Round every number in the expression to a convenient nearby value FIRST — nearest whole number for decimals, nearest multiple of 10/100 for percentages and large numbers, nearest perfect square under a square root.
- Then calculate normally using BODMAS with the rounded numbers — the goal is a value close to the exact answer, not the exact answer itself.
- Round consistently: if you round one number up, the overall error is usually small as long as you don’t round several numbers in the same direction by a large margin.
- This is a pure speed technique for multiple-choice questions where the options are spread far enough apart that an approximate value clearly identifies the right one.
Worked examples
1. 41.9% of 599.8 ≈ ?
Solution
- Round: 41.9% → 42%, and 599.8 → 600.
- 42% of 600 = (42/100) × 600 = 252.
Answer: 252
2. √255.8 × 4.02 ≈ ?
Solution
- Round: 255.8 → 256 (a perfect square), and 4.02 → 4.
- √256 = 16, so 16 × 4 = 64.
Answer: 64
3. 12.98 × 7.03 + 25.02 ≈ ?
Solution
- Round: 12.98 → 13, 7.03 → 7, and 25.02 → 25.
- 13 × 7 + 25 = 91 + 25 = 116.
Answer: 116
4. 3599 ÷ 59.8 ≈ ?
Solution
- Round: 3599 → 3600, and 59.8 → 60.
- 3600 ÷ 60 = 60.
Answer: 60
Try these yourself
Round each number first, then calculate, and check against the answer.
1. 20.2% of 749.9 ≈ ?
Answer: 150
2. 15.92 × 4.08 ≈ ?
Answer: 64
3. 6399 ÷ 79.7 ≈ ?
Answer: 80
