Floor and Flat Puzzle Solved Questions

This is Floor-Based Puzzle with a second dimension added — each floor has more than one flat side by side, so a person isn’t placed by floor alone, but by floor AND flat together. Here’s the approach, one shared puzzle with six fully worked questions, and a few more to try yourself.

The approach, quickly

  • Draw a grid: floors going up one axis, flats (Left/Right, or however many are given) going across the other — every person needs exactly one floor-and-flat cell, and every cell needs exactly one person.
  • "Directly above/below" usually means the SAME flat position, one floor up or down — not just anywhere on the floor above. Check the question’s own wording if it says otherwise.
  • Work the clues that fix both floor AND flat first (the most restrictive). A clue that only rules something out ("not on floor 2 or 3") becomes useful once it leaves just one open cell.
  • An edge case is often the key: if someone must be "directly above" another person who could be on the top floor, that’s impossible — there’s nothing above the top floor — so that placement gets ruled out immediately.
  • A clue saying two people live "on the same floor" fixes only the floor they share, not which flat each takes — don’t assume they’re also on the same side unless the clue explicitly says so.

Worked examples

1. Six friends — A, B, C, D, E and F — live in a 3-floor building (floor 1 at the bottom, floor 3 at the top), with two flats on each floor: Left and Right. A lives on floor 1, in the Left flat. D lives on floor 2, in the Right flat. E lives directly above C (same side, one floor up). F lives in a Right flat. B does not live on floor 2 or floor 3. C does not live in a Right flat. Which flat does C live in?

Solution

  1. A is on floor 1, Left (given). B does not live on floor 2 or 3, and floor 1’s Left flat is already A’s — so B must take floor 1, Right, the only cell left on floor 1.
  2. D is on floor 2, Right (given).
  3. C does not live in a Right flat, so C must be in a Left flat — on floor 2 or floor 3 (floor 1 is already full).
  4. E lives directly above C. Floor 3 is the top floor, so if C were on floor 3, there would be no floor above for E — impossible. So C must be on floor 2, Left.

Answer: Floor 2, Left

2. Using the same arrangement, which floor and flat does E live in?

Solution

  1. Since C is on floor 2, Left, and E lives directly above (same side, one floor up), E is on floor 3, Left.

Answer: Floor 3, Left

3. Using the same arrangement, which flat does F live in?

Solution

  1. Every other person is now placed — A, B, C, D and E fill five of the six cells, leaving only floor 3, Right for F, which matches the given clue that F lives in a Right flat.

Answer: Floor 3, Right

4. Using the same arrangement, who lives directly below F?

Solution

  1. F is on floor 3, Right. The cell directly below it, floor 2, Right, belongs to D.

Answer: D

5. Using the same arrangement, how many people live on floor 2?

Solution

  1. Floor 2 holds D (Right) and C (Left) — two people.

Answer: 2

6. Using the same arrangement, who lives in the Left flat on floor 3?

Solution

  1. Floor 3 holds E (Left) and F (Right) — the Left flat belongs to E.

Answer: E

Try these yourself

Using the same arrangement above, answer these, then check against the answer.

1. Using the same arrangement, who else lives on floor 1 (with A)?

Answer: B

2. Using the same arrangement, which floor and flat does B live in?

Answer: Floor 1, Right

3. Using the same arrangement, who lives directly above A?

Answer: C

4. Using the same arrangement, which floor and flat does D live in?

Answer: Floor 2, Right

5. Using the same arrangement, who lives directly above B?

Answer: D
