Analogy Questions with Solutions
Analogy questions ask you to complete a pair using the same relationship as a given pair — the whole skill is naming that relationship precisely before looking at the options. Here’s the approach, four fully worked examples covering the patterns that come up most, and a few to try yourself.
The approach, quickly
- Name the relationship between the first pair in words before looking at the options — "tool used by," "type of," "opposite of," "part of" — a vague sense of "these are related somehow" leads to the wrong option.
- Apply that exact same relationship, in the exact same direction (first word → second word), to the third word. Reversing the direction partway through is a common mistake.
- For number analogies, check standard operations in order: a fixed addition/subtraction, a fixed multiplication/division, then squares or cubes.
- If more than one option seems plausible, go back and restate the relationship more precisely — a precise relationship usually rules out all but one option.
Worked examples
1. Pen is to Writer as Brush is to ?
Solution
- A Pen is the tool a Writer uses to do their work.
- Applying the same "tool used by" relationship: a Brush is the tool a Painter uses.
Answer: Painter
2. Mango is to Fruit as Carrot is to ?
Solution
- The relationship is "type of" — Mango is a type of Fruit.
- Applying the same relationship: Carrot is a type of Vegetable.
Answer: Vegetable
3. 4 : 16 :: 6 : ?
Solution
- Check the relationship between 4 and 16: 4² = 16, so the operation is "squared".
- Apply the same operation to 6: 6² = 36.
Answer: 36
4. Big is to Small as Fast is to ?
Solution
- The relationship is "opposite of" — Small is the opposite of Big.
- Applying the same relationship: the opposite of Fast is Slow.
Answer: Slow
Try these yourself
Name the relationship first, then check against the answer.
1. Needle is to Tailor as Scalpel is to ?
Answer: Surgeon (tool used by)
2. Rose is to Flower as Lion is to ?
Answer: Animal (type of)
3. 2 : 8 :: 3 : ?
Answer: 27 (cubed: 2³ = 8, so 3³ = 27)
