Simplification (BODMAS) Questions with Solutions
Simplification questions are a speed test more than a difficulty test — the only real skill is applying the BODMAS order correctly instead of solving strictly left to right. Here’s the concept, four fully worked examples, and a few to try yourself.
The concept, quickly
- BODMAS gives the order of operations: Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction — solve innermost brackets first, not left to right across the whole expression.
- "Of" means multiply, but is evaluated before a separate division or multiplication that appears later in the expression — this is the "V" or "O" that trips people up when they skip straight to left-to-right.
- Division and multiplication rank EQUALLY with each other and are done left to right in the order they appear — it’s not "always divide before multiplying". The same is true for addition and subtraction.
- Work brackets from the innermost outward: solve ( ) first, then { }, then [ ], substituting each result back in before moving to the next layer out.
Worked examples
1. Simplify: 15 + 6 ÷ 3 × 2 − 4
Solution
- Division and multiplication first, left to right: 6 ÷ 3 = 2, then 2 × 2 = 4.
- Now addition and subtraction, left to right: 15 + 4 − 4 = 15.
Answer: 15
2. Simplify: 5 of 8 ÷ 4 + 6 × 2
Solution
- "Of" first: 5 of 8 = 40.
- Division and multiplication next: 40 ÷ 4 = 10, and 6 × 2 = 12.
- Addition last: 10 + 12 = 22.
Answer: 22
3. Simplify: 100 − [20 + {10 − (6 − 2)}]
Solution
- Innermost brackets first: (6 − 2) = 4.
- Next layer: {10 − 4} = 6.
- Next layer: [20 + 6] = 26.
- Finally: 100 − 26 = 74.
Answer: 74
4. Simplify: (3/4) of 60 + 25% of 80 − 15
Solution
- "Of" terms first: (3/4) of 60 = 45, and 25% of 80 = 20.
- Addition and subtraction, left to right: 45 + 20 − 15 = 50.
Answer: 50
Try these yourself
Apply BODMAS the same way, then check against the answer.
1. Simplify: 20 − 4 × 3 + 6 ÷ 2
Answer: 11
2. Simplify: 2 of 15 ÷ 5 − 3 × 2
Answer: 0
3. Simplify: 50 − [15 + {20 − (8 + 4)}]
Answer: 27
